Theme Issue No.4: Interface

For our fourth issue, we invite contributors to explore the notion of the ‘interface’: the point of interaction between two (or more) systems, entities, or realities.

As the world of today is increasingly mediated by technology, the concept of the interface highlights our ability to connect with and act upon the world. In an active sense of the word, the interface is an object of our own creation, designed to broaden our access to various aspects of reality; such as, scientific instruments, digital technologies and language. In another more passive sense of the word, an interface is something we exist within by default. We exist in vast numbers of dynamic relations as biological nervous-systems interacting with others, nested within socio-economic-, eco- and information-systems.

We are particularly interested in reflections on the relationships we form with the systems we create and inhabit. Potential questions to explore include, but are not limited, to:

1. How do interfaces shape our understanding of reality, identity, and agency, and how should they?
2. What are the  philosophical implications of technological interfaces on our perception of self and others?
3. How do interfaces transform the way we experience the physical, digital, or social worlds, and how can they do so for the better?
4. Are interfaces neutral  mediators, or do they actively shape the systems they connect?
5. How do interfaces mediate our access to the natural world, knowledge, or even one another, and how might they continue to do so?

“Interface” is open to interpretation—submissions should thoughtfully explore the theme. For more inspiration see our thought bubble on our Instagram. However please note that our thought-bubble is not exhaustive of what can be explored, so long as submissions plausibly express the theme as outlined.
If you’re unsure about your work’s suitability, feel free to reach out with questions.
